The Supervisor As Coach
Coaches are described as "...setting high expectations, teaching, helping, consoling, inspiring, pushing and role-modeling." Every work day, supervisors are asked and expected to function in each of these capacities. For many supervisors, this is a dramatic change from the days when they directed work, gave orders and established rules. The new activities require different skills and expertise. This interactive
session is designed to give participants an opportunity to explore and practice these new skills and will cover:
- What actions a supervisor can take to create a sense of teamwork among employees;
- Techniques for helping employee groups make good decisions;
- Positive ways to generate employee motivation;
- What makes some groups work while others don't; and
- Concrete steps to take when trying to change the supervisory role from authoritarian to coach.
As the workplace expectations of supervisors change, coaching may be one of the most critical skills for all people who manage or direct the work of others. This workshop is intended to aid in that skill development.
